Different cultures have cuisines that are expensive and desirable. Factors like unusual flavors, unique characteristics and rarity make them costly. These delicacies change over a period of time, like Flamingo tongue which was a delicacy in ancient Rome is no more eaten. Therefore what might be a delicacy in one place could be just a regular food in another or not eaten at all.
10. Matsutake Mushrooms-$1000/pound

Domenico Crolla’s “Pizza Royale 007” is a 12 inch pizza pie densely packed with an assortment of some of the world’s most expensive food ingredients such as lobster marinated in cognac, caviar soaked in champagne, sun blush tomato sauce, Scottish smoked salmon, venison medallions, prosciutto and vintage balsamic vinegar. In addition to all these fine ingredients, it is topped with a significant amount of edible 24-carat gold flakes.

There was a competition where 100 melons grown by farmers from Yubari were judged. They had previously been judged the best pair. Yubari while famous for its sweet and high-quality melons used to be a coal- mining town. Unfortunately it went bankrupt last year. The $22,872 fetched by this melon will surely be a help in Yubari’s rehabilitation.

In Medieval Russia, caviar was a peasant food, but by the time Shakespeare wrote, caviar had gained its association with connoisseurship and luxury. For caviar the older the fish, the more elegant and exquisite is the flavor. Almas caviar comes from Iran making it extremely rare and extremely expensive. The only known outlet is the Caviar House & Prunier in London England’s Picadilly that sells a kilo of the expensive Almas caviar in 24- Carat gold tin for $16000 or about $25000. Almas caviar has an extremely short shelf life so if you are able to afford it, make sure you eat it all.

Because of this, they are a true delicacy and that has made them be referred to as the king of all fungi. In 2007 the record was beaten by a truffle weighing 3.3 Ibs. Casino tycoon Stanley Ho purchased the white truffle, hailing from Tuscany for US $330,000 at an annual auction in Hong Kong. The latest auction was for two truffles weighing just under 3 Ibs total. Once again Ho paid $330000 for the fungal delicacy. With the current TV shows, expensive truffles are being exposed to a wider audience than ever before.
